EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration, dated January 4, 1911, depicts a significant shift in the dynamics of commerce with the emergence of the "From Producer to Consumer" model. The image showcases two men engaged in this new system. The first man, labeled "Producer," is using a pulley system called "US Parcels Post" to send a package directly to the consumer, bypassing the traditional middleman and the grasp of the "Express Co." The Producer stands at one end of the pulley system, straddling a railway station and a commission market. At the other end of the pulley system, a man and a woman, labeled "Consumer," eagerly await the arrival of their package. The Consumer sends payment for the goods received through the same system, ensuring a seamless transaction. The Express Co. man, left behind, is unable to interfere with this direct exchange. This illustration represents a pivotal moment in history, as the rise of direct-to-consumer shipping challenged the dominance of traditional middlemen and delivery services. The US Parcels Post, a precursor to modern parcel delivery services, enabled producers to connect directly with consumers, offering greater convenience, lower prices, and more control over the sales process. This innovative approach laid the foundation for the e-commerce industry as we know it today.
