EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, four Australian-built Dassault Mirage III-Os grace the runway, their sleek and powerful forms a testament to the engineering prowess of the time. The Mirage III-O is a variant of the French-designed Mirage III fighter jet, which was locally manufactured in Australia under license by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC) between 1961 and 1967. The Australian Defence Force (ADF) operated a total of 150 Mirage III-Os, making it the largest user of the type outside of France. These jets served with distinction in various roles, including as interceptors, trainers, and target tugs. The two Mirage III-Os featured prominently in this image, A3-24 and A3-39, were built in 1964 and 1965, respectively. The Mirage III-O was a versatile and advanced aircraft for its time, featuring a delta wing design, afterburning turbojet engines, and advanced avionics. Its impressive performance capabilities included a maximum speed of over Mach 2 and a range of over 1,500 kilometers. This photograph captures the essence of a bygone era in military aviation history, showcasing the pride and innovation that went into the production of these remarkable Australian-built aircraft. The Mirage III-Os, with their distinctive red and white livery, were a common sight at RAAF bases throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Their retirement from service in the late 1990s marked the end of an era, but their legacy continues to inspire and influence the design and development of modern military aircraft. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the important role that Australia played in the production and operation of these iconic jets.
