EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir George Pollock (1786-1872): A Distinguished Military Career and Appointment as Constable of the Tower of London This evocative portrait captures the stern yet resolute visage of Sir George Pollock, a highly decorated British military officer who rose through the ranks to become a Field-Marshal and ultimately, the Constable of the Tower of London in 1870. Born in 1786, Pollock's military career began in earnest when he joined the 23rd Regiment of Foot as an ensign in 1803. He quickly distinguished himself in battle, and by 1812, he had been promoted to the rank of major. Throughout the 19th century, Pollock continued to serve with distinction in various campaigns, including the Peninsular War, the Afghan War, and the Crimean War. He was knighted in 1854 for his bravery during the Siege of Sevastopol. In 1870, Pollock was appointed Constable of the Tower of London, an ancient and prestigious position that dated back to the Norman Conquest. As Constable, Pollock was responsible for the security and maintenance of the historic fortress and its crown jewels. He held this position until his death in 1872. This photograph, taken during Pollock's later years, captures the gravity and dignity of a man who had dedicated his life to serving his country. With his stern expression and military bearing, Sir George Pollock stands as a testament to the courage and leadership that defined the British military during a time of great change and upheaval.
