This evocative print captures the intense and pivotal moment of the Siege of Maastricht in the Spanish Netherlands in 1579. The scene unfolds before us as the sun casts a warm, golden light over the exterior of the Monastery of St. Bernard, now El San Farnesio, in Maastricht, Netherlands. The tranquility of the monastery's courtyard is shattered as Spanish troops, led by Prince Lorenzo and Alessandro de Farnese, prepare for battle against the Dutch rebels. The group of soldiers, dressed in armor and wielding weapons, are focused and determined, their eyes fixed on the impending conflict.
