EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning statue represents the Egyptian god Ptah, a deity revered as the creator of the universe and the god of craftsmen during the New Kingdom period (1550-1070 BC). The statue, dating back to the 18th or 20th Dynasty, is currently housed in the Egyptian Museum of Turin, Italy. Ptah is depicted in a standing position, with his arms crossed in front of his chest, holding the ankh, the symbol of life, and the scepter with the Djed pillar, a symbol of stability and continuity. The god is also adorned with a false beard, a sign of divine power and maturity, and wears a crown with the horns of Hathor, the goddess of music, dance, and fertility. The statue is carved from diorite, a dark, dense stone that was highly valued in ancient Egypt for its durability and beauty. The intricately detailed features of the statue, including the wrinkles on Ptah's face and the delicate folds of his clothing, showcase the exceptional craftsmanship of the ancient Egyptian artisans. Ptah was often depicted in a profile view, as seen in this statue, which was believed to represent the god's hidden, mysterious nature. As the demiurge, or creator god, Ptah was believed to have shaped the world through his thoughts and words, making him an essential deity in Egyptian mythology. The statue of Ptah is a testament to the rich history and artistic achievements of ancient Egypt, and serves as a reminder of the enduring influence of Egyptian mythology and culture on the world.
