EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate XIV from the Birds report, Volume IV of the British Antarctic (Terra Nova) Natural History Reports, features an intriguing image of a Terra Nova bird, captured by the renowned naturalists Frank Debenham, Lionel Walter Rothschild, and Boris Porchinskiy during the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913) led by Robert Falcon Scott to the South Pole. The expedition, which marked the second British attempt to reach the geographic South Pole, resulted in the discovery of several new species of birds in the Antarctic region. This particular bird, identified as a Sauropsida, or reptile-like bird, is depicted in the photograph with its distinctive beak wide open, revealing the unique structure that sets it apart from other avian species. The Sauropsida order, which includes extinct groups such as the Ichthyornithiformes and the Ornithorhynchiformes, is characterized by their reptile-like features, including their elongated, bony beaks. The discovery of these birds was a significant contribution to the scientific knowledge of the Antarctic region, shedding light on the diverse range of species that inhabit the extreme environments of the polar regions. The Terra Nova Birds Report, which documented the findings of the expedition's ornithologists, remains an important reference for ornithologists and historians alike, providing insights into the natural history of the Antarctic and the intrepid explorers who braved the harsh conditions to expand our understanding of the natural world.
