EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Training Ship Exmouth, anchored off the coast of Grays, Essex, in 1893. Operated by the Metropolitan Asylums Board since 1876, the ship provided essential seafaring training for boys aged 12 to 15, most of whom had been residents of London workhouses. The original vessel, built of wood, had become increasingly unsafe by the turn of the century and was replaced in 1903 with an identical ship made of iron and steel. The new vessel, much like its predecessor, continued to offer invaluable instruction in seamanship, with many of the trainees going on to join the naval services. The image presents a poignant snapshot of life aboard the Exmouth, with the boys standing proudly on the deck, clad in their uniforms, as they learn the skills that would shape their futures. The Thames in the background adds to the sense of history and tradition, making this a powerful reminder of the transformative power of maritime training and the enduring legacy of the Training Ship Exmouth.
