Underwater house telephone equipment, Malta

Telephone equipment connected with an underwater, inflatable house, being used on a beach in Malta. The house was anchored to the seabed, some 50 feet deep, in Paradise Bay, off the coast of Malta. It was equipped with lighting, telephone and immersion heaters with which the inhabitants could make hot drinks. It was constructed by teams of engineers and diving enthusiasts from Imperial College of Science and Technology and Enfield College of Technology. It was 9ft long and 6ft wide, constructed from rubberised material on a steel frame, and weighed around 500 lb. The team leader was David Baume who hoped it would be the first of a series of low cost underwater living spaces from which scientists could explore the seas. David and some other team members were able to spend a night 30 feet below the surface. The following day a severe storm caused the house to collapse. Date: 1969

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing photograph from 1969, we witness an underwater house telephone equipment setup in the crystal-clear waters of Paradise Bay, off the coast of Malta. The image showcases an inflatable, underwater house, anchored to the seabed around 50 feet deep. This innovative structure, constructed by teams of engineers and diving enthusiasts from Imperial College of Science and Technology and Enfield College of Technology, was equipped with essential amenities such as lighting, telephone, and immersion heaters, allowing its inhabitants to make hot drinks. Measuring 9ft long and 6ft wide, the house was built using a rubberized material on a steel frame, weighing approximately 500 lb. The team leader, David Baume, envisioned this as the first of a series of low-cost underwater living spaces, enabling scientists to explore the depths of the sea. Baume and some team members bravely spent a night 30 feet below the surface, experiencing the unique underwater lifestyle. However, the following day, a severe storm struck, causing the house to collapse. Despite the setback, this groundbreaking project represents a fascinating glimpse into the 1960s and the innovative spirit of those who dared to dream of living and conducting research beneath the waves. This image is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of those who pushed the boundaries of science and technology during that era.
