This evocative photograph captures a group of United States Army Apache Scouts, a unique and important unit in American military history. The Apache Scouts were Native American volunteers who served as scouts, guides, and messengers for the US Army during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In this image, the scouts are depicted wearing their standard-issue uniforms, complete with military hats and rifles, but with the addition of traditional tribal headwear and scarves. The Apache Scouts were primarily composed of members of the Chiricahua and Mescalero Apache tribes, who had previously been in conflict with the US military and settlers. By serving as scouts, they were able to earn a measure of trust and respect from the US Army, and in turn, gained a degree of autonomy and protection for their communities. The Apache Scouts saw action in numerous campaigns against other Native American tribes and against Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War.
