EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a reconstruction of The Wealden, an iconic dinosaur model created by the renowned British sculptor Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins in 1854. The Wealden represents an Ankylosauria, a type of armored dinosaur from the late Cretaceous period. Ankylosauria are characterized by their heavy armor, which provided them with excellent protection against predators. This particular model, originally displayed at Crystal Palace Park in London, was based on the fossil remains of Iguanodon and Hylaeosaurus. However, Hawkins made several creative interpretations, such as adding armor plates to the back and sides of the model, which were not present in the original fossils. The Wealden is classified as a nodosaurid, a subgroup of Ankylosauria. Its body shape resembles that of a tank, with a broad, flat back and a small head. The model is also adorned with a club-like tail, which was believed to have been used for defense. The print is a beautiful representation of the original artwork by Walter Ray Woods, which was used as a promotional material for the Crystal Palace exhibitions. The image captures the intricate details of the model, from the textured armor plates to the veiny texture of the dinosaur's skin. The Wealden is an important piece of dinosaur history, as it was one of the first large-scale dinosaur models ever created. Its creation marked a turning point in the public's perception of dinosaurs, transforming them from mythical creatures to real, living beings. This print is a testament to the enduring fascination that dinosaurs continue to hold for us, and serves as a reminder of the groundbreaking work of Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins and the early pioneers of paleontology.
