EDITORS COMMENTS
William III, Prince of Orange (1650-1702), also known as William of Orange or William II of England, is depicted in this powerful and iconic print commemorating his victory at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. The battle took place on July 12, 1690, near the River Boyne in County Meath, Ireland, and marked a turning point in the War of the League of Augsburg, also known as the Nine Years' War. William III, a Dutch stadtholder, had been invited by the English Parliament to depose his Catholic cousin, King James II, who had been ruling England since 1685. James II, who was also the King of Ireland, had been perceived as a threat due to his Catholic faith and his efforts to repeal the Protestant succession laws. William III, who was a Protestant, had the support of a coalition of European powers, including the Dutch Republic, England, and the Holy Roman Empire. The Battle of the Boyne was a decisive victory for William III, who defeated James II's forces and secured his claim to the English, Scottish, and Irish thrones. The battle is commemorated in this print, which shows William III on horseback, dressed in armor and brandishing a sword, leading his troops into battle. The print also depicts the orange standard, which became a symbol of the Protestant cause and the House of Orange. The Battle of the Boyne marked the end of the old regime in Ireland and the beginning of a new era of Protestant rule. It also strengthened the ties between England, Scotland, and the Netherlands and helped to establish the Protestant succession in the British Isles. The print is a testament to William III's military prowess and his role as a key figure in European history.
