EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous occasion in Coventry's musical history. The city was proudly represented by the talented students of St Johns Church of England School, Allesley, as they joined forces with the renowned Coventry Youth Orchestra and choirs from Birmingham for a special recording of BBC Radio Four's school programme "Together". The invitation for St Johns choir to participate in this prestigious event came through the esteemed Coventry Centre of Performing Arts. Under the guidance of their dedicated trainer, Mrs Grewcock, these young voices harmonized beautifully alongside the skilled musicians led by conductor Mr Brian Chappell. Renowned composer Douglas Coombes took charge during two preliminary concerts and directed the memorable recording session captured in this photograph. In addition to showcasing their exceptional talent on this grand stage at Birmingham Town Hall, St Johns School had another reason to celebrate. This year marked both their 150th anniversary since its establishment and also commemorated 25 years since moving to its present location on Winsford Avenue. As we gaze upon this image from November 30th, 1989, we are reminded not only of the incredible musical achievements but also of the rich history that surrounds St Johns School and its contribution to Coventry's vibrant arts scene.
