EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the drawing room at Chartwell House, offering a glimpse into the personal life of Sir Winston Churchill and Lady Churchill. The focal point of the room is undoubtedly the exquisite portrait of Lady Churchill, skillfully painted by Douglas Chandor in 1946. Its presence on the left side of the fireplace adds an air of elegance and grace. Above the fireplace hangs a picture that holds sentimental value for Sir Winston - it depicts his first racehorse, Colonist II, captured by Raoul Millais. This artwork serves as a reminder of his passion for horse racing and adds a touch of nostalgia to this historic space. A remarkable Lalique glass cockerel catches our attention as well. A gift from General De Gaulle to Lady Churchill, it symbolizes their enduring friendship and serves as a testament to her influence even beyond British borders. The arrangement within this room tells its own story - Sir Winston often occupied the far end where he engaged in spirited games of Bezique with Lady Churchill or other esteemed guests. The table on the right is thoughtfully set up for these intense matches, inviting friendly competition amidst an atmosphere steeped in history. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time from May 20th, 1966, we are reminded not only of Chartwell House's significance but also how furniture and decor can transport us through decades while preserving cherished memories.
