Princess Mary Christmas Gift Tin. In November 1914, an advertisement was placed in

Princess Mary Christmas Gift Tin. In November 1914, an advertisement was placed in the national press inviting monetary contributions to a " Sailors and Soldiers Christmas Fund", which had been created by Princess Mary, the 17 year old Daughter of King George V and Queen Mary. The purpose was to provide everyone who would be wearing the Kings uniform on Christmas Day 1914 with a " gift from the nation".
The response was truly overwhelming, and it was decided to spend the money on an embossed brass tin box, based on a design by Messrs Adshead and Ramsey. The contents varied considerably - Officers and Men On Active Service afloat or at the Front received a tin containing a combination of pipe, tinder lighter, 1 ounce of tobacco and 20 cigarettes in distinctive yellow monogrammed wrappers.
Non-smokers and boys received a bullet pen/pencil, a packet of acid tablets and a khaki writing case. Indian troops often received sweets and spices, whilst hospital nurses, who were included as recipients, were treated to chocolate. Many of these items were despatched separately from the boxes themselves.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Princess Mary Christmas Gift Tin: A Symbol of Generosity and Gratitude in 1914". In this photo print, we are transported back to November 1914, a time when the world was engulfed in the chaos of World War I. The image showcases the iconic Princess Mary Christmas Gift Tin, an embodiment of compassion and unity during those trying times. Initiated by Princess Mary herself, this heartwarming campaign aimed to bring joy to all those serving their country on Christmas Day. An advertisement placed in national press urged individuals to contribute monetarily to the "Sailors and Soldiers Christmas Fund". The response was nothing short of overwhelming. To distribute these heartfelt gifts from the nation, an embossed brass tin box was created based on a design by Messrs Adshead and Ramsey. Inside each tin lay carefully selected items tailored for different recipients. Officers and Men On Active Service received a combination of pipe, tinder lighter, tobacco, and cigarettes wrapped in distinctive yellow monogrammed wrappers. Non-smokers and boys were gifted with a bullet pen/pencil set alongside acid tablets and a khaki writing case. Indian troops often found sweets and spices within their tins while hospital nurses were treated to delectable chocolate. This remarkable photograph captures not only the tangible contents but also represents the immense gratitude felt towards those who selflessly served their countries during wartime. It serves as a poignant reminder that even amidst darkness, acts of kindness can illuminate hope.
