EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the summer of 1936, when Great Western Railway (GWR) and Southern Railway (SR) joined forces to promote rail travel to the picturesque coastal town of Plymouth in Devon. The vibrant artwork, created by Frank Henry Mason, showcases his exceptional talent for capturing marine and coastal scenes. Mason's deep connection with the sea is evident in this poster as he beautifully portrays Plymouth's stunning coastline. The image transports us to a world where sandy beaches stretch endlessly along the shore, inviting holidaymakers to bask under the warm sun. Boats dotting the crystal-clear waters add a touch of tranquility and hint at exciting maritime adventures waiting just beyond reach. During this era, railway companies played a significant role in shaping social and economic life across Europe. This particular poster aimed not only at promoting tourism but also at showcasing Plymouth as an idyllic destination for relaxation and recreation. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece of art from NRM/Pictorial Collection, it serves as a reminder of how railway posters were once powerful tools that captured people's imagination and enticed them to explore new places. Today, it stands as a testament to both Mason's artistic brilliance and the enduring allure of Plymouth's coastlines for generations past and present.
