EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1930, when rail travel was at its peak and Harrogate was a popular destination for those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation. The poster, produced by London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), beautifully captures the essence of this Yorkshire spa town. In the foreground, we see visitors leisurely strolling through lush gardens in front of the magnificent Royal Baths. These baths, opened in 1897, were renowned for their healing waters and luxurious facilities. The elegant architecture of the building is highlighted against a backdrop of trees and flowers in full bloom. The artwork for this poster was created by Fred Taylor, a talented artist who left his mark on various prestigious projects during that era. Notably, he designed ceiling paintings for Lloyds' Underwriting Room as well as murals for Reeds Lacquer Room. His work exhibited at esteemed venues like the Royal Academy. Taylor's attention to detail is evident in this piece as well; every element is meticulously depicted to entice potential travelers. This promotional poster served as an invitation to experience Harrogate's tranquil ambiance and indulge in its therapeutic offerings. Today, thanks to National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, we can still admire this snapshot from history—a testament to both Taylor's artistic prowess and LNER's commitment to showcasing Britain's most enticing destinations through their railway network.
