EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Britannia Tubular Bridge, a testament to engineering brilliance and an emblem of rail services on the Irish Mail. The poster, produced by London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) between 1923 and 1947, transports us back in time to witness the awe-inspiring sight of the Irish Mail departing from this historic bridge. Designed by renowned engineer Robert Stephenson in 1850, the Britannia Tubular Bridge gracefully spans over the Menai Straits towards Anglesey in Wales. Its architectural marvel stands as a symbol of human ingenuity and determination to conquer nature's obstacles. The artistic touch behind this masterpiece comes from Norman Wilkinson (1878-1971), a celebrated marine painter who studied at Portsmouth and Southsea Schools of Art. His expertise shines through as he captures both the grandeur of the bridge itself and its harmonious integration with its natural surroundings. Wilkinson's talent extended beyond this particular poster; he designed numerous other railway posters for various companies throughout his career. Notably, he organized the Royal Academy series of posters for London & Midlands Railway (LMR) in 1924. As we gaze upon this remarkable image captured by NRM/Pictorial Collection at National Railway Museum, we are transported into a world where innovation meets artistry—a world where railways connect distant lands while simultaneously inspiring wonder within those fortunate enough to witness their splendor.
