EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to a picturesque harbour scene in Padstow, Cornwall, during the tranquil month of June in 1906. The focal point of this stunning image is the majestic Guiding Star, a topsail schooner hailing all the way from London. Built in Howden in 1875, this magnificent vessel measured an impressive 81 feet and 4 inches long by 22 feet and 6 inches wide by 11 feet tall. In this snapshot frozen in time, we see the Guiding Star gracefully sailing through the calm waters with her sails billowing against the wind. The Barry pilot cutter no. 5 accompanies her on this maritime journey, adding an extra touch of nautical charm to the composition. The surrounding scenery showcases quaint buildings nestled along the shoreline as well as a cluster of masts dotting the harbor—a testament to Padstow's rich seafaring heritage. A group of men can be seen tending to their duties aboard both vessels, their presence underscoring the bustling activity that once animated these shores. Sadly, fate had other plans for our beloved Guiding Star. On Christmas Eve in 1926, she met her untimely demise when she drifted ashore on Wales' coast during an eerily calm night—her final resting place after years spent traversing vast oceans. Through photographer John Charles Burrow's lens and meticulous craftsmanship behind this print now housed at Royal Cornwall Museum, we are transported back over
