EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph takes us back in time to the picturesque village of Polperro, Cornwall, during the 1860s. The focal point of the image is Chapel Rock, also known as Peak Rock, standing proudly at the entrance to Polperro harbour. Its rugged beauty perfectly complements the surrounding coastal landscape. In the foreground, an open boat with several people on board catches our attention. Perhaps they are fishermen returning from a successful day out at sea or locals enjoying a leisurely ride along the coast. As we explore further into this snapshot of history, we notice lobster pots left to dry onshore. These essential tools of their trade would later be stored in the net loft building seen above. The photographer's skillful composition allows us to glimpse into daily life in this charming fishing village. We can almost hear children's laughter echoing through narrow streets lined with quaint cottages and bustling shops that once thrived on maritime industry. This photographic print is part of "The History of Polperro" manuscript by Thomas Q. Couch (1878), which builds upon Jonathan Couch's earlier work published in 1871. It serves as a visual testament to Cornwall's rich heritage and its deep connection with both land and sea. Captured by Lewis Harding, this image evokes nostalgia for simpler times when oars gently sculled through calm waters and men relied on their skills as fishermen for sustenance and livelihoods were intertwined with nature's rhythms.
