Glass lantern slide from a lecture, entitled Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots, given by Cornishman and amateur photographer, Major Arthur William Gill, in around 1925. He was well known in Cornwall and elsewhere during the 1920s and 1930s for his presentations of stills and cine film to many groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society and the London Cornish Society. The quarter plate slides which he took prolifically with his ordinary camera are, in many cases, colour. These were painted by his own hand to great effect

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Carnon Viaduct in Perranwell, Cornwall, around 1925. The original wooden viaduct was a masterpiece designed by the legendary Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened its majestic arches in 1863. However, as time passed, progress demanded change, and in 1933 it was replaced by a magnificent stone structure that stands to this day. The image itself is a glass lantern slide from a lecture titled "Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots" presented by Major Arthur William Gill. A proud Cornishman and talented amateur photographer, Major Gill gained recognition throughout Cornwall and beyond during the vibrant decades of the 1920s and 1930s for his presentations of both still photographs and cine films. Major Gill's quarter plate slides were taken prolifically with his ordinary camera but possessed an extraordinary quality - many were hand-painted with vibrant colors to enhance their visual impact. This artistic touch added depth to already breathtaking scenes like this one. In this particular photograph, we see steam billowing from a passing train as it traverses the Carnon Viaduct. The vintage carriages evoke nostalgia for an era when railways connected communities across Cornwall. It is worth noting that this caption does not mention any commercial use of the photo print; instead, it focuses on celebrating the historical significance of both the viaduct itself and Major Arthur William Gill's contribution to preserving these cherished moments through his artistry behind the lens.
