Badbury Rings
Badbury Rings. Aerial photograph of Badbury Rings, an Iron Age hillfort consisting of three circular ramparts surrounding an inner fort (centre). The fort was constructed on a site which was occupied from the Bronze Age, indicated by the four round barrows (burial mounds) next to the modern car park (at left). It is thought that Badbury belonged to an ancient Dorset tribe known as the Durotriges who also inhabited Maiden Castle in Dorchester. Photographed in Dorset, England

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph captures the ancient beauty and historical significance of Badbury Rings, an Iron Age hillfort located in Dorset, England. The image showcases the three circular ramparts that enclose the inner fort at the center, providing a glimpse into the impressive defensive structure constructed by its inhabitants. The rich history of this site is evident from the presence of four round barrows, or burial mounds, adjacent to the modern car park on the left side of the photo. These barrows serve as a testament to human occupation dating back to the Bronze Age. It is believed that Badbury Rings was once home to a tribe known as Durotriges, who also inhabited Maiden Castle in Dorchester. As one gazes upon this picturesque landscape dotted with earthworks and ridges, it becomes clear why Badbury Rings has become such a popular tourist attraction. Its archaeological remains offer valuable insights into prehistoric life and provide visitors with a tangible connection to Britain's ancient past. Managed by English Heritage, this site stands as a proud symbol of British history and serves as an important reminder of our ancestors' ingenuity in constructing fortified structures for defense. This stunning aerial photography captured by Science Photo Library beautifully encapsulates both the scenic countryside surroundings and historical significance associated with Badbury Rings.
