The most active areas appear red, with less intense activity ranging through yellow to blue. Aurorae are caused by particles from the Sun (the solar wind) interacting with Earths atmosphere. Earths magnetic field channels the charged particles to the poles, where they collide with gas molecules in the upper atmosphere, causing them to glow.
