CDF particle detector, Fermilab

MODEL RELEASED. CDF particle detector at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) near Chicago, USA. The CDF (Collider Detector Facility) records subatomic particles created in high-energy proton-antiproton collisions in the Tevatron coll- ider. It co-discovered the top quark in 1994. Here the detector is partly disassembled between operation runs. The black segments (left) are part of the outer muon chambers. The red areas are part of the magnet which bends charged particles travelling out from the collision point. The blue segments (right) are part of the hadron calorimeter. When in use these parts are closed tightly together. Photographed in 1998. The physicist is ROB ROSER

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the CDF particle detector at Fermilab, a renowned particle physics laboratory located near Chicago, USA. The CDF (Collider Detector Facility) plays a crucial role in recording subatomic particles generated during high-energy proton-antiproton collisions within the Tevatron collider. Notably, it was instrumental in co-discovering the top quark back in 1994. In this particular image taken in 1998, we witness the CDF detector partially disassembled between operation runs. The black segments on the left side represent the outer muon chambers, while the red areas depict sections of the magnet responsible for bending charged particles emanating from the collision point. On the right side, we can observe blue segments that form part of the hadron calorimeter. During usage, these components are tightly closed together to ensure accurate measurements. The physicist featured in this photograph is Rob Roser—a male technician who has dedicated his expertise to unraveling mysteries of particle physics and contributing to groundbreaking nuclear research. Science Photo Library proudly presents this remarkable snapshot capturing both scientific ingenuity and technological prowess within one frame. It serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and understanding at its most fundamental level—exploring particles that constitute our universe's building blocks.
