Clockwork orrery

Clockwork orrery, historical artwork. This is an 18th century mechanical clockwork model of the planetary motions in the solar system. The planets rotated around the Sun (upper centre); the Earth and Moon are just to the left of the Sun. Saturn (far left) shows its ring structure and some of its moons. Only the six planets nearest to the Sun are featured; Uranus, Neptune and Pluto (not seen) were discovered in 1781, 1846 and 1930 respectively. The orrery was a popular instrument of astronomical instruction during the 18th and 19th centuries

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite piece of historical artwork known as the Clockwork Orrery. Created in the 18th century, this mechanical model beautifully depicts the intricate motions of planets within our solar system. At the center, we see the Sun, surrounded by six neighboring planets rotating gracefully around it. Just to its left lies a small representation of Earth and its faithful companion, the Moon. The far left side reveals Saturn with its iconic ring structure and a glimpse of some of its moons. However, it's important to note that Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are absent from this orrery since they were discovered after this masterpiece was crafted. During the 18th and 19th centuries, orreries like this one served as popular instruments for teaching astronomy. With their precise mechanics and detailed design, they offered invaluable insight into celestial movements. This vertical photograph captures not only a remarkable piece of scientific equipment but also transports us back in time to an era when understanding our place in the cosmos was still unfolding. As we admire this monochrome marvel from Science Photo Library's collection, we can't help but appreciate both its historical significance and artistic beauty
