Geiger counter, for detecting radioactivity

Geiger counter, a device used for detecting radioactivity by its ionising effect as it passes through a gas at low pressure (contained in the cylindrical tube). The charged particles so produced are counted mechanically and a reading is given on the dial or displayed audibly by a series of characteristic clicks. Here, the counter is registering the radiation emitted by a watch. Radium salts are used for the paint on luminous watch dials despite their being radioactive. Some of the counts registered are due to natural background radiation from cosmic rays and the decay of radio- isotopes in the soil

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a Geiger counter, an essential device used for detecting radioactivity. The Geiger counter operates by measuring the ionizing effect of radiation as it passes through a gas at low pressure within its cylindrical tube. As charged particles are produced, they are mechanically counted and displayed audibly through characteristic clicks or visually on the dial. In this particular image, the Geiger counter is diligently registering the radiation emitted by a watch. It's fascinating to note that despite their radioactive nature, radium salts are still utilized in luminous paint for watch dials. This raises questions about safety measures and considerations within the industry. While some counts detected by the Geiger counter originate from natural background radiation caused by cosmic rays and decay of radio-isotopes in soil, this photograph emphasizes our ability to monitor and measure such energy emissions accurately. The image serves as a reminder of how technology plays a crucial role in safeguarding against potential hazards posed by radioactivity. It also highlights ongoing advancements in industries related to monitoring and detection devices like Geiger counters. Science Photo Library has once again captured an intriguing moment that sparks curiosity about our understanding of radioactivity and its applications across various fields without mentioning any specific commercial use or company involved.
