MAP microwave background

Cosmic microwave background. Whole sky image of the cosmic microwave background made by the MAP (Microwave Anisotropy Probe) spacecraft. This map indicates that the age of the universe is around 13.7 billion years. The data also reveal that the universe is expanding at 71 kilometres per second per megaparsec (1 Mpc = 3262 light years). The colours reveal variations in the temperature of the universe in all directions. This correlates to the density of material at the time when the universe became transparent to radiation, about 380, 000 years after its creation. The denser regions (red, yellow) formed the seeds of galaxies and other structures. Data obtained in 2003

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the MAP microwave background, a remarkable image of the cosmic microwave background captured by the Microwave Anisotropy Probe spacecraft. The map not only provides insights into the age of our universe, estimated to be around 13.7 billion years old, but also reveals crucial information about its expansion. With vibrant colors representing temperature variations across all directions, this visual masterpiece correlates with the density of material at a significant moment in cosmic history. Approximately 380,000 years after its inception, when the universe became transparent to radiation, denser regions (depicted in red and yellow) emerged as precursors to galaxies and other celestial structures. The data collected in 2003 further shed light on key aspects such as inflation and cosmology while offering valuable knowledge for astrophysics research. Notably, it indicates that our universe is expanding at an astonishing rate of 71 kilometers per second per megaparsec (1 Mpc = 3262 light-years), emphasizing its vastness and continuous evolution. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring full-sky image, we are reminded of humanity's relentless pursuit to unravel the mysteries of space. This photograph serves as a testament to mankind's insatiable curiosity about our origins and existence within this vast cosmos. With each new discovery made possible through scientific exploration like MAP microwave background mapping, we inch closer towards comprehending the profound wonders that lie beyond our planet Earth.
