Baikal is 636km long and 79km across at its widest and has a maximum depth of 1642m. Olkhon is the largest of the 27 islands in the lake and has an area of 730 sq. km. At its height Olkhon reaches 818m above the surface of the lake. Olkhon has about 1500 inhabitants, all of whom are Buryat people native to the region. The local economy is mainly subsistence farming, although there is increased volume of tourism in the region due to Baikals status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
