Othniel C. Marsh, US palaeontologist

Othniel Charles Marsh (1831-1899), American palaeontologist. Marsh attended Yale University and was made professor of palaeontology there in 1866. During his career he led several expeditions to the American West to collect fossils, and published many papers, in which he described over 500 new fossilised species. From 1883 to 1885 he was President of the National Academy of Science, and from 1882 to 1892 he was Vertebrate Palaeontologist for the U.S. Geological Survey. Marsh donated his entire fossil collection to Yale in 1898
