Planetary nebula NGC 6826
Planetary nebula. Hubble space telescope image of the NGC 6826 planetary nebula around a dying star. About half the stars mass has been ejected to form the nebula. The hot remnant at the centre is brighter than any other which has a planetary neb- ula. It ejects a wind of particles which collides with older material to form a hot, interior bubble. The wind drives older material before it to give the bubble a bright rim. The red areas are old, cool gas hit by faster gas streaming from the star. NGC 6826 is 2200 light years away in the Cygnus constellation. Image taken by Hubbles Wide Field & Planetary Camera 2 on 27 January 1997

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Planetary nebula NGC 6826, as captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. Located approximately 2200 light years away in the Cygnus constellation, this celestial wonder is a testament to the extraordinary processes that occur during a star's dying moments. NGC 6826 reveals itself as an intricate display of vibrant colors and ethereal shapes. The central remnant of the dying star shines with unparalleled brilliance, surpassing all other planetary nebulae in its radiance. This luminous core expels a powerful wind of particles that collides with older material surrounding it, giving rise to a scintillating interior bubble. The bubble's strikingly bright rim is formed as the wind propels older gas ahead of it, creating a stunning contrast against cooler red areas where slower-moving gas has been struck by faster streams from the star. Each element within this cosmic masterpiece tells a story of stellar evolution and transformation. Captured on January 27th, 1997, by Hubble's Wide Field & Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2), this image serves as both an awe-inspiring visual spectacle and an invaluable scientific resource for astronomers studying planetary nebulas and their role in shaping our universe. This remarkable photograph from Science Photo Library invites us to contemplate the vastness and complexity of our cosmos while reminding us that even in death, stars can leave behind breathtaking legacies.
