Ring Nebula M57, Hubble image C017 / 3725
Ring Nebula (M22, NGC 6720). Combined images from the Subaru Telescope and Hubble Space telescope of the Ring Nebula M57. The Ring nebula is a planetary nebula lying around 2300 light years from Earth in the constellation Lyra. Planetary nebulae are glowing shells of gas and plasma ejected by medium and low-mass stars at the end of their lives. As the shells collide with interstellar material, the energy of the collision ionises the gas at the interface, causing it to glow. The Ring nebula is actually barrel-shaped, appearing round because we see it end-on. It is illuminated by a central white dwarf star

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Ring Nebula M57, a planetary nebula located approximately 2300 light years away from Earth in the constellation Lyra. The image is a stunning combination of photographs taken by both the Subaru Telescope and Hubble Space Telescope, providing us with an extraordinary view of this celestial wonder. Planetary nebulae like the Ring Nebula are formed when medium and low-mass stars reach the end of their lives. These dying stars eject glowing shells of gas and plasma into space. As these shells collide with interstellar material, the resulting energy ionizes the gas at their interface, causing it to emit a radiant glow. Although its name suggests a circular shape, this barrel-shaped nebula appears round due to our perspective viewing it end-on. Its ethereal glow is illuminated by a central white dwarf star that lies within its core. The composite image captures not only the intricate details of this stellar phenomenon but also highlights its surroundings in deep space. This photograph serves as a reminder of our place in the vastness of our universe and offers glimpses into processes such as star birth and stellar formation. With its rich colors and intricate patterns, this breathtaking image invites us to marvel at nature's cosmic artistry while igniting curiosity about astrophysics and our ever-expanding knowledge of distant celestial objects.
