Schiaparellis map of Mars, 1877-1888

Schiaparellis map of Mars. This drawing of the two hemispheres of Mars was made by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli (1835-1910) between the years 1877 and 1888. He named the seas and continents of Mars, and called the straight surface features channels (mistranslated as canals). He also noticed that the patterns on the surface changed with the Martian seasons. He wrongly assumed this to be due to seasonal changes in vegetation. It is now known that Mars is swept by powerful dust storms which alter the surface features. The accompanying text is in German

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Schiaparelli's map of Mars, meticulously crafted between 1877 and 1888 by Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli. With an eye for detail, he named the seas and continents of the enigmatic red planet while referring to its straight surface features as channels (later mistranslated as canals). Notably, Schiaparelli observed that the patterns on Mars' surface changed with its seasons, although he mistakenly attributed this phenomenon to vegetation variations. We now understand that powerful dust storms sweep across Mars, altering its landscape. The accompanying text in German adds a touch of historical significance to this artwork from the late 19th century. This illustration offers a glimpse into early astronomical research and discoveries made during that era. As we explore this duo of hemispheres mapped out by Schiaparelli, we are reminded of humanity's relentless curiosity about our neighboring planets within the solar system. With its rich history and geographical features labeled in German text, this print invites us to delve into planetary science and appreciate how far our understanding has evolved since these observations were made. It serves as a reminder of the tireless pursuit of knowledge that drives scientific exploration even today.
