According to Gene Kritsky, who maintains an archive of Darwin photographs, the Elliot and Fry image was from a session at his home, Down House, in 1879. Darwin was famously not keen on having his photograph taken by strangers. Here he is placed against a background resembling the trees of his Sandwalk where he did his thinking
