Soviet space shuttle, Buran, on launchpad

The Soviet space shuttle, Buran, mounted on its launch vehicle, Energia, on a launch pad at Baikonur Cosmodrome, USSR. An unmanned Buran was launched on November 15th 1988 for a test flight lasting 3 hours 25 minutes, completing 2 Earth orbits before its safe landing back at Baikonur. Buran is remarkably similar in appearance to the American space shuttle, with one major difference. Whilst the American shuttle has its own engines, the rockets required to lift Buran into orbit are located on Energia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Soviet space shuttle, Buran, poised on its launchpad at Baikonur Cosmodrome in the USSR. The powerful Buran is securely mounted on its launch vehicle, Energia, ready for an extraordinary journey into space. In a historic moment of scientific achievement, an unmanned Buran embarked on a test flight lasting 3 hours and 25 minutes on November 15th, 1988. It completed two Earth orbits before gracefully descending back to Baikonur for a safe landing. This remarkable feat showcased the incredible capabilities of Soviet engineering and their prowess in manned spaceflight. Buran bears striking similarities to its American counterpart, the space shuttle; however, one key distinction sets them apart. While the American shuttle possesses its own engines for lift-off, Buran relies on the rockets housed within Energia to propel it into orbit. The image encapsulates not only the grandeur of this pivotal moment in history but also highlights the immense technological achievements of both nations during this era of intense competition in space exploration. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring photograph from Science Photo Library's collection, we are reminded of humanity's insatiable curiosity and determination to conquer new frontiers beyond our home planet.
