Waxing half moon

Waxing half Moon. Optical image of a waxing (increasing in apparent size) half Moon. This stage in the phases of the Moon is known as the first quarter. The phases of the Moon (new Moon, first quarter, full Moon and then back to new Moon) are due to its orbit around the Earth. When it lies in between the Earth and the Sun, only the unlit side faces us (new Moon). When the Earth lies between it and the Sun, we see a full Moon. Each cycle takes around 28 days. The lunar hemisphere that faces Earth has bright highlands and dark seas, or maria, which are lowland plains full of dark solidified lava. Several large craters are also seen. Photographed from California, USA, on 26 January 2007

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of a waxing half moon, captured in stunning detail. The optical image reveals the moon in its first quarter phase, as it gradually increases in apparent size. This celestial phenomenon occurs due to the moon's orbit around our Earth. The phases of the moon - new moon, first quarter, full moon, and back to new moon - are beautifully illustrated through this snapshot. When positioned between the Earth and Sun, only the unlit side faces us, resulting in a new Moon. Conversely, when our planet lies between the Moon and Sun, we witness a full Moon illuminating our night sky. Taken on January 26th, 2007 from California, USA by Science Photo Library (not affiliated with any company), this monochrome image unveils intricate lunar features. The hemisphere facing Earth displays bright highlands contrasting with dark seas known as maria – lowland plains formed by solidified lava flows. Additionally, numerous large craters dot its surface. As we marvel at this photograph's exquisite details and contemplate humanity's connection to space exploration and astronomical wonders like these moonscapes within our solar system; let us appreciate how far we have come since that momentous day captured over a decade ago in California's night sky.
