EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Rover Class Locomotive, a 4-2-2 design built in 1871, housed at the Steam Museum of the Great Western Railway (GWR). The Rover, not to be confused with the Rover Company, is an intriguing piece of railway history that once graced the tracks of the GWR network. The Rover Class locomotives were designed by George Armstrong and George Jackson Churchward, two renowned engineers of the time, and were built between 1871 and 1873. This particular locomotive, with its unique 4-2-2 wheel arrangement, was one of only three built in this configuration. The number of leading wheels (two) and trailing wheels (four) was a departure from the standard 2-2-2 or 2-4-0 designs of the era, making the Rover a truly distinctive engine. The Rover's sleek, elegant design is evident in this photograph, with its tall, slender chimney and graceful curves. The engine's tender, filled with water and coal, is attached to the rear, providing the necessary fuel and water for the locomotive's journey. The intricate details of the locomotive's boiler, cylinders, and motion are all on full display, a testament to the engineering prowess of the time. The Rover Class locomotives were primarily used on passenger trains, demonstrating their ability to provide both power and style. This photograph captures a moment in time, preserving the Rover's legacy for future generations to appreciate and learn from. The Steam Museum of the Great Western Railway is proud to have this historic locomotive in its collection, ensuring that the story of the Rover Class lives on.
