At the time, the Cheltenham Spa Express and the Great Western Railway (GWR) were locked in a fierce competition with other railway companies to claim the title of the fastest train. The Cheltenham Flyer, powered by a Castle Class locomotive, was one of the GWR's most iconic express trains, renowned for its speed and elegance. Didcot Station, which opened in June 1844, stood witness to the thrilling passage of this steam-powered behemoth.
