The Soviet Unions Liudmila Belousova and Oleg Protopopov, who won the silver medal at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, West Germany.
The husband-and-wife team of were the first Soviet/Russian pair skaters to achieve international acclaim and provided the stimulus which ultimately led to many successes by future Soviet pairs skaters.
In total they won two Winter Olympic titles, in 1964 and 1968, and medalled eight times at both the World and European Championships, including four consecutive World and European gold medals.
In the 1968 Winter Olympics at 32 and 35 years old respectively, they were among the oldest champions in figure skating
