In Ukraine, youth gathered at vigils (vetchornitsi) to get acquainted, especially after work in the fields at the end of summer. Dance and laughter are themes generally associated by Repin with Ukraine. Here the painter highlights the traditional " red corner" of the Isba, which must be visible as soon as you enter the room and where the icons of the house are located. With a marked light and dark, he captures the almost suffocating atmosphere of the party.
