EDITORS COMMENTS
The Hotel Metropolitan: A Glimpse into New York's Glorious Past This photograph takes us back to the bustling streets of early 20th century New York City. Standing proudly at the corner of Broadway and 27th Street, we see The Hotel Metropolitan in all its grandeur. Despite being captured through a silver gelatin print, the image transports us to a time when horse-drawn carriages roamed these very streets. The hotel, opened in 1852 and sadly demolished in 1895, was an architectural marvel designed by Joseph Trench and John Butler Snook. Its magnificent facade showcased intricate details that epitomized the opulence of the Gilded Age. As we observe this snapshot frozen in time, it is impossible not to imagine the stories that unfolded within those walls. Intriguingly, this photo also captures a moment of transition - scaffolding surrounds parts of the building as renovations take place. We witness daily life scenes with pedestrians going about their business amidst construction work happening nearby. It serves as a reminder that even iconic structures require upkeep and adaptation over time. Thanks to Bridgeman Images' preservation efforts, we are fortunate enough to have access to this remarkable piece of history today. This photograph allows us to appreciate both the architectural beauty of The Hotel Metropolitan and glimpse into everyday life during one of New York City's most transformative eras.
