General Sarrail, 1910s, (1919). Creator: Unknown
General Sarrail, 1910s, (1919). Portrait of French soldier Maurice Sarrail (1856-1929), Allied commander in Greece during World War I. Sarrail commanded the French 3rd Army on the Western Front from August 1914. The French Commander-in-Chief, General Joffre, sacked Sarrail from his command in 1915 because of his openly socialist views and criticism of Joffres command of the army. Sarrail had prominent allies in political circles however and as a result he was given command of the French army sent to Salonika in October 1915, assuming command of all Allied troops in Greece the following January. Sarrail continued to involve himself in political intrigue and was eventually dismissed by Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau in December 1917. From " The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects", Vol. V, by W. Stanley Macbean Knight. [Caxton Pulishing Company, Limited, London, 1919]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures General Maurice Sarrail, a prominent French soldier during the 1910s. Serving as the Allied commander in Greece during World War I, Sarrail initially commanded the French 3rd Army on the Western Front before being dismissed due to his socialist views and criticism of General Joffre's command. However, thanks to his political allies, Sarrail was given command of the French army sent to Salonika in October 1915. Assuming control over all Allied troops in Greece by January of the following year, Sarrail continued to involve himself in political intrigue throughout his tenure. Unfortunately for him, Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau eventually dismissed him from service in December 1917. The portrait showcases a distinguished-looking man with a moustache and an intense gaze. His military uniform reflects his high rank and authority. The monochrome image adds a sense of historical significance and solemnity to this snapshot from one of history's most tumultuous periods. This print is part of "The History of the Great European War: its causes and effects". Volume V by W. Stanley Macbean Knight (Caxton Publishing Company Limited, London, 1919). It serves as a testament to General Maurice Sarrail's role as both a military leader and an influential figure within political circles during World War I.
