Ottawa, the Proposed Capital of Canada, 1858. Creator: Unknown

Ottawa, the Proposed Capital of Canada, 1858. The selection of this place as the seat of Government for Canada has not proved satisfactory, though possibly the choice of any one of the other rival cities would have given umbrage to a still larger party. The difficulty, or rather the impossibility, of providing a seat of Government that should satisfy Upper and Lower Canada at the same time caused the question to be referred to the home [ie British] Government, and, after a careful consideration of the claims of the respective cities soliciting this honour, Ottawa was declared the most fitting candidate...An engraving of a city which is the subject of such grave dissensions in the Canadian Legislative Assembly will doubtless be of interest to our readers. The suspension-bridge in the foreground of the Illustration, spanning the foaming chasm at the Chaudiere Falls...unites Upper and Lower Canada. In the centre the towers of the Roman Catholic Cathedral are distinctly visible above the mass of buildings. The high ground to the right is the destined site for Government offices, in the event of Ottawa being the seat of Government'. From "Illustrated London News", 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled "Ottawa, the Proposed Capital of Canada, 1858," showcases the picturesque town of Ottawa, which was then under consideration as the seat of the Canadian government. The selection of Ottawa as the capital had been a contentious issue, with both Upper and Lower Canada presenting strong arguments for their preferred cities. The inability to find a compromise between the two regions led the British government to make the final decision. The photograph, published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1858, offers a glimpse into the charm of Ottawa during this period. The suspension bridge in the foreground, gracefully spanning the Chaudière Falls, symbolizes the union of Upper and Lower Canada. In the center, the towering Roman Catholic Cathedral dominates the scene, its distinct silhouette rising above the bustling town. The high ground to the right, marked as the proposed site for government offices, adds to the anticipation of Ottawa's potential future as the political hub of the country. Despite the intense debates in the Canadian Legislative Assembly, this enchanting image of Ottawa serves as a testament to the enduring allure of the town, which, though not yet officially declared the capital, held great promise and potential. The "Illustrated London News," a renowned publication of its time, recognized the significance of this image and shared it with its readers, adding to the growing excitement surrounding Ottawa's future as the capital city of Canada.
