EDITORS COMMENTS
Marguerite de France, Duchess of Berry (1523-1574), was the eldest daughter of King Francis I of France, who ruled from 1515 to 1547. This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Georges Jacques Gatine after an illustration by Louis Marie Lante for the Galerie Francaise de Femmes Celebres, captures the elegant beauty and refined elegance of the Duchess in her prime. The Duchess is depicted wearing a fashionable velvet cap, adorned with ermine trim and a delicate lace veil, atop her dark curls. Her velvet dress, with its tight bodice and slashed sleeves, is a testament to the opulence and luxury of the French court. The bodice is further accentuated by a ruff collar, a popular accessory during the Renaissance period, which frames her delicate neck and enhances the elegance of her high-necked gown. Beneath the voluminous skirt of her dress, a scarlet petticoat peeks out, adding a pop of colour to the monochromatic ensemble. In her hand, she holds a feather fan, a fashionable accessory used to keep cool in the warm French climate. The intricate detailing of the engraving, from the delicate folds of her gown to the intricate patterns on her fan, showcases the exceptional craftsmanship of the time. Marguerite de France was known for her intelligence, wit, and beauty, and was a patron of the arts and literature. She was married to Charles, Duke of Berry, and was the mother of several children, including the famous artist, Francois Clouet. This engraving serves as a testament to her enduring beauty and the opulence of the French court during the Renaissance period.
