EDITORS COMMENTS
Philippe Fabre Eglantine: A Tragic Figure in French History This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic and controversial figure of Philippe Fabre Eglantine (1750-1794), a French actor-manager whose impulsive decision to leave the world of theater for the political arena would ultimately lead him to the guillotine. Born in Paris, Fabre Eglantine began his career on the stage in the mid-18th century, quickly rising to prominence as a talented actor and innovative theater manager. However, as the political tides began to shift in France, his radical political views became increasingly apparent. A fervent supporter of the French Revolution, Fabre Eglantine was an early member of the infamous Society of the Friends of the Constitution, a radical political group that advocated for the overthrow of the monarchy. In 1792, Fabre Eglantine was elected to the National Convention, the new French legislative body. However, his extreme views and inflammatory rhetoric soon earned him enemies among his political peers. In September 1793, during the Reign of Terror, Fabre Eglantine was arrested and charged with various crimes, including embezzlement and treason. Despite a lack of evidence, he was found guilty and sentenced to death by guillotine. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the tragic fate of Philippe Fabre Eglantine, a man who, in his pursuit of political ideals, sacrificed his career, reputation, and ultimately, his life. His story serves as a cautionary tale of the dangers of extremism and the unintended consequences of political ambition.
