EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of an exotic and enchanting evening at the Arabian Nights Ball, held at the Ghezireh Casino in Cairo, Egypt in March 1912. The image features three prominent visitors to Cairo, Mrs Philip Atherley, Mrs Trefusis, and Miss Burgoyne, dressed in stunning costumes that were much admired by society. The Arabian Nights Ball was a fancy dress event, and the ladies embraced the theme with open arms, donning elaborate and intricately designed outfits that evoked the mystique and allure of the Orient. Mrs Atherley's costume, adorned with gold sequins and intricate beading, shimmered in the soft glow of the casino lights. Mrs Trefusis' outfit, with its flowing robes and ornate headpiece, transported her to another world. And Miss Burgoyne, in her vibrant red costume, exuded a sense of playfulness and excitement. The Ghezireh Casino, located on the banks of the Nile, was a popular destination for high society during the early 20th century. The casino's Arabian Nights Ball was a highlight of the social calendar, attracting visitors from all corners of the globe. The event offered a glimpse into the exotic and mysterious world of the Middle East, and the guests embraced the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich culture and traditions of the region. This photograph is a beautiful reminder of a bygone era, when travel was an adventure, and the world seemed a much larger and more mysterious place. It invites us to imagine the stories and experiences of these three women, and the many other guests who attended the Arabian Nights Ball, and to be transported to a time and place where the impossible seemed possible, and dreams could come true.
