EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures Ulrich, Duke of Württemberg (1487-1550), a prominent figure in German history during the late Middle Ages. Ulrich reigned as Duke of Württemberg from 1498 until his death in 1550. He was the eldest son of Duke Eberhard the Bearded and his wife, Anne of Austria. Ulrich is depicted here in regal attire, wearing the distinctive collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece, which he was inducted into in 1515. The collar is made of alternating gold and enamel pendants in the shape of fleeces, symbolizing the golden wool brought back by Joseph of Arimathea. The collar is worn around his neck, fastened by a large golden clasp. Ulrich is also wearing a tall, conical hat, known as a "Morocco hat" or "Turban hat," which was a popular headgear among the German nobility during the late Middle Ages. The hat is adorned with fur, adding to the Duke's regal appearance. During his reign, Ulrich faced numerous challenges, including conflicts with neighboring territories and religious tensions. He was a supporter of the Reformation and played a significant role in the spread of Protestantism in Württemberg. Despite these challenges, Ulrich is remembered for his successful military campaigns and his efforts to modernize and strengthen the administration of his duchy. This photograph print offers a glimpse into the grandeur and power of the German ducal courts during the late Middle Ages, as well as the distinctive fashion and symbolism of the time. Ulrich, Duke of Württemberg, stands as a testament to the rich history and complexity of this period in European history.
