EDITORS COMMENTS
Get ready to rev up the nostalgia! This stunning print captures the start of the 1977 Italian Grand Prix, where Formula One legends Mario Andretti, Niki Lauda, James Hunt, and Jody Scheckter led the pack at Monza. The iconic Lotus 78 of Andretti takes top honors as he crosses the starting line ahead of Lauda's Ferrari 312T2 in second place. Meanwhile, pole-sitter James Hunt's McLaren M26 is already struggling after spinning out on lap 27. Rounding out the front row is Jody Scheckter's Wolf WR1, which unfortunately retired from the race due to a blown engine on lap 24. This momentous scene showcases some of F1's greatest drivers and machines in their prime. The Italian Grand Prix was one of only two races that year where Andretti didn't win (he took home victory at Monza), while Lauda would go on to secure his first World Championship title later that season. This image by Phipps/Sutton for Motorsport Images brings back memories of an era when F1 was all about raw speed, skillful driving, and legendary rivalries.
