DNA sequence magnified by a magnifying glass

DNA sequences. A magnifying glass over two DNA sequences. The sequence also known as an autoradiogram is four rows of irregularly spaced black bands. A DNA sample can be taken from body tissue such as hair, blood and saliva. The DNA is then fragmented with enzymes and arrayed by size by electrophoresis. The banding pattern is then exposed onto an X-ray film. The bands represent the positioning of the base pairs (cytosine- guanine and adenine-thymine) on the DNA chain. This makes up the genetic code which is unique to every person. It can be used in hereditary tests such as paternity suits and in criminal identification

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of DNA sequencing, magnified by a powerful magnifying glass. The image reveals two DNA sequences, known as autoradiograms, displayed in four rows of irregularly spaced black bands. These sequences are obtained from body tissues like hair, blood, and saliva. To obtain this visual representation, the DNA sample is first fragmented using enzymes and then arranged by size through electrophoresis. The resulting banding pattern is then exposed onto an X-ray film. Each band represents the positioning of base pairs such as cytosine-guanine and adenine-thymine along the double helix structure of DNA. The genetic code depicted in this photograph is unique to every individual and serves various purposes in scientific research. It plays a crucial role in hereditary tests like paternity suits and criminal identification. With its round shape and rounded circular patterns, this still life composition captures the essence of biochemistry and genetics within a laboratory setting. This image symbolizes advancements in biotechnology and highlights the importance of DNA research for understanding our genetic makeup. Science Photo Library has masterfully captured this mesmerizing glimpse into the complex world of genetics through their lens while showcasing the beauty hidden within our very own genetic codes.
