Thomas Young, British physicist
Thomas Young (1773-1829), British physicist and Egyptologist. Young was a voracious reader as a child, and excelled at languages. In 1794 he described the anatomy and focusing of the eye, and was elected to the Royal Society. Between 1800 and 1804 he championed the wave theory of light. Using the apparatus now known as Youngs slits, he showed how a split beam formed bands of dark and light as the waves interfered with each other. This theory was not popular at the time, however. He later proposed that light travelled as a trans- verse wave. He also translated some of the Egyptian hieroglyphics on the Rosetta Stone

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the brilliant mind of Thomas Young, a renowned British physicist and Egyptologist. Born in 1773, Young displayed an insatiable appetite for knowledge from a young age, excelling particularly in languages. In 1794, he made significant contributions to the field of anatomy by describing the intricate workings of the human eye, earning him a prestigious membership in the Royal Society. Between 1800 and 1804, Young fearlessly championed his wave theory of light using his groundbreaking apparatus known as "Young's slits". Through this innovative experiment, he demonstrated how beams split into bands of darkness and light as waves interfered with each other. Despite facing opposition at that time, Young persisted in proposing that light traveled as transverse waves. In addition to his scientific pursuits, Thomas Young also possessed remarkable linguistic skills. He played a pivotal role in translating Egyptian hieroglyphics found on the Rosetta Stone—a monumental achievement that shed new light on ancient civilizations. This historical illustration captures not only Young's intellectual prowess but also his dedication to unraveling complex mysteries across various disciplines. It serves as a testament to his enduring legacy within both physics and Egyptology. This mesmerizing portrait is brought to you by Science Photo Library—an invaluable resource for those seeking visual representations of scientific discoveries throughout history.
