Arsenal had lost the first leg 1-0, leaving them with a daunting task to overturn the deficit and advance to the final. The Gunners started the second leg with a sense of urgency, and Van Persie, in his second season with the club, was instrumental in their comeback. In the 35th minute, he opened the scoring with a cool finish, and just 12 minutes later, he struck again, this time with a powerful header from a set piece.
