EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the exquisite baby cot of the Prince Imperial, a gift bestowed upon Empress Eugenie by the City of Paris in 1856. The cradle, measuring an impressive 214x159x65 cm, is displayed at the Musee de la Ville de Paris, Musee Carnavalet in France. Crafted from rosewood, enamel, and silver, this magnificent piece was created at a cost of 156,839 francs. Its design takes inspiration from a ship's shape found within the coat of arms of Paris. At its prow stands an intricately sculpted eagle by Henri Jacquemart while at its poop rests a female figure symbolizing the city of Paris supporting the imperial crown; both crafted with utmost precision by Pierre-Charles Simart. The sides of this remarkable cradle feature four Sèvres medallions adorned with blue enamel designs conceived by Hippolyte Flandrin. Each medallion represents one of the cardinal virtues: Prudence, Justice, Temperance, and Courage. In 1902 Empress Eugenie generously donated this cherished heirloom to Carnavalet Museum where it continues to captivate visitors with its opulence and historical significance. This photograph allows us to appreciate not only its grandeur but also serves as a testament to the craftsmanship and artistry that thrived during this era. As we gaze upon this image captured by Baltard Victor in all its monochromatic glory through Bridgeman Images' lens - we are transported back in time to witness firsthand a tangible representation of royal indulgence and artistic mastery.
